Co-Management FORUM

August 20, 2014 @ 8:30 am - 4:00 pm

Join the Farm, Food Safety & Conservation Network (FFSCN) for the 2014 Food Safety & Water Quality Co-Management Forum. The daylong agenda will include a morning session with information and discussion of drought, FSMA and water quality as well as an afternoon field session to observe and discuss co-management practices at an organic producer’s site. The first morning panel will provide important updates on California’s continuing drought, the use of recycled municipal water, the Food Safety Modernization Act, and water quality issues for irrigated agriculture. Panelists include representation from the Monterey Co. Water Resources Agency, the Monterey Co. Water Pollution Control Agency CSIP project, the San Benito Co. Water District, the State Water Resources Control Board, and the Food and Drug Administration. The second panel will be composed of producers representing diverse commodities who will review a case study and also discuss the costs and management decisions required in managing their commodities for both food safety and sustainability goals. In the afternoon we’ll visit a high-intensity organic vegetable farm south of Salinas for a series of field stops to: 1) Hear from the land manager, growers and their food safety professionals how they manage for food safety and environmental quality in a potentially challenging setting; 2) Work through site-specific scenarios to address co-management challenges in tandem with food safety, agricultural, conservation and resource management professionals; and 3) Conclude with a large group discussion on fresh observations resulting from the field activity.
