The California Strawberry Commission’s Food Safety Certificate Program, now in its third year, focuses on five subject areas delivered in four class meetings. Strawberry employees that participate satisfactorily in all four classes will obtain the Food Safety Certificate. In addition, for those who have completed the Food Safety Certificate, a new class, Food Safety Leadership, will be offered for continuing education. All classes are conducted in Spanish and require speaking, reading and writing in Spanish.
For first-line leaders who directly supervise harvest workers. Participants learn Good Agricultural Practices that harvest workers must follow to keep strawberries free from contamination. Participants learn how to convey the importance of these practices and give feedback to co-workers about food safety behavior.
